WHAT: Please join AAA Colorado, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), and Save Our Air Medical Resources (SOAR) for a pre-Memorial Day event to remind Coloradans about the increased dangers of summer driving and to always find a safe, non-drinking driver every time plans include alcohol. Memorial Day is the kickoff to the summer driving season, and the start of the 100 deadliest days of the year for teen drivers – nationwide, ten people will die in a crash involving a teen driver each day during the 100 days between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

WHEN: Thursday, May 24 | 10:00 a.m. MT

WHERE: Denver Police Academy | 2155 N. Akron Way, Denver, CO 80238

WHO:

  • Fran Lanzer, Executive Director, MADD Colorado
  • J. Skyler McKinley, Director of Public Affairs, AAA Colorado
  • Glenn Davis, Highway Safety Manager, CDOT
  • Devin Butler, who was struck and severely injured by a drunk driver and whose life was saved by air-medical transport
  • Col.  Matthew Packard, Chief, Colorado State Patrol

VISUALS: Two emergency air-medical helicopters (AirLife Denver and Flight for Life Colorado), the Denver Police Department Blood Alcohol Testing (BAT) van, and police cruisers for tours, viewing, and photos.

WHY: Summer is a dangerous time of year on the roads, especially for teen drivers, as more people travel by car to special events such as prom and graduation, vacations, and backyard barbecues. Drunk and drugged driving are 100 percent preventable crimes. AAA, MADD, and SOAR strongly support law enforcement and their ability to conduct sobriety checkpoints to save lives, and efforts to preserve air-medical resources to respond when the unthinkable occurs.

About MADD
Founded in 1980 by a mother whose daughter was killed by a drunk driver, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is the nation's largest nonprofit working to end drunk driving, help fight drugged driving, support the victims of these violent crimes, and prevent underage drinking. MADD has helped to save more than 350,000 lives, reduce drunk driving deaths by more than 50 percent, and promote designating a non-drinking driver. MADD's Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving calls for law enforcement support, ignition interlocks for all offenders, and advanced vehicle technology. MADD has provided supportive services to nearly one million drunk and drugged driving victims at no charge through local victim advocates and the 24-hour Victim Help Line 1-877-MADD-HELP.
