Karl Mecklenburg

What question do you hear most often when fans first meet you?
Do you miss football?

How do you respond?
I miss a couple of things about it. I miss the adrenalin, which Is one of the reasons I do pubic speaking now (www.Karlmecklenburg.com). I miss the film sessions, where each player on the field is graded on technique and on assignment on each play. You know exactly where you stand and what you need to work on. I miss the guys.

How do you describe the Super Bowl experience to those who’ve never been?
My Super Bowl experiences were not good—three AFC Championships and three big losses in the Super Bowl. I played well in the first two, but in the third, I was injured in the first quarter and missed the rest of the game.

If there’s one rule you would change in football, what would it be, and why?
Most rule changes in the NFL have unintended consequence that are worse than the original problem. Please leave the game as is.

When you get together with other players, what do you talk about?
When you have friends and comrades you respect and have worked alongside there is very little you can’t talk about.  Most of the talk is about football past and present with some family and aches and pains talk thrown in.

Tell me about Pat Bowlen, the man. What does he mean to you?
Pat was a great leader. He made an effort to connect personally with each of his players and coaches. There was no question that we were a family, and our mission was to win.
